Exploring Weight Training Program Options

When it comes to lifting weights, there are three different types of programs you might want to following:  bodybuilding, powerlifting and strength training.  Although all three of these types of workouts involve lifting weights, the goal and the methods followed with these types of programs are actually quite different.  Which one is right for you?

Strength Training

Strength training is a form of exercise that is often referred to as resistance training.  The primary goal of strength training is to increase your bone density, muscle mass and functional strength.  By doing so, your body becomes more toned.  If you are not involved in competitive bodybuilding or lifting, strength training is probably the type of program you will want to follow.

Bodybuilding

The goal of bodybuilding is to achieve a certain physical appearance.  In order to achieve the “sculpted” look they desire, bodybuilders generally follow restrictive diets and engage in a routine that will help them achieve a low percentage of body fat.  Although body builders do build strength through their workout routines, strength is not the main goal.  Rather, achieving a well-proportioned, sculpted look is the goal of the bodybuilder.

Powerlifting

Whereas body builders are trying to achieve a certain look, powerlifters are more interested in gaining strength.  Powerlifters are those who participate in strongmen competitions and strive to lift more weight than their competitors.  Since powerlifters are not working toward achieving a sculpted look, they may have a higher percentage of body fat than bodybuilders.  In addition, they generally focus on three basic forms of weight training: bench press, squat and deadlift.
